Two weeks ago, football coaches at Cathedral Catholic High School said they wouldn’t be surprised if winless St. Augustine ran the table and won a state championship.

And they could be right.

The Saints, a seventh seed in San Diego’s Division 3, allowed just 27 points in four playoff games and beat San Pasqual 13-7 Saturday to secure a spot in the CIF Regional Football Championships.

The Saints (4-10) will be on the road Saturday for a Division 4-A game. They’ll play a similar opponent in Downey St. Pius X-St. Matthias, which was 1-9 entering the playoffs and then won the Southern Section Division 8 title, outscoring four opponents 93-69.

The Saints are ranked No. 233 in the state. The Warriors are No. 210.

The San Diego Section will have six teams in the Southern California Regionals.

Lincoln and El Capitan will play their games at home on Friday.

Poway and Monte Vista have home games Saturday, while Granite Hills and St. Augustine hit the road.

“When you’re in a long losing streak like we were, it’s easy to hit bottom,” said St. Augustine coach Ron Caragher. “We stayed the course and only tried to control when we could control.”

The Saints lost a pair of games by five points and one by three and played a brutally tough schedule. They went winless in the Western League, losing 63-0 to Open Division champion Lincoln.

Lincoln (10-2) was rewarded with a SoCal Regional home game, hosting Newbury Park (14-0) in the Division 1-AA bracket. Friday’s game kicks off at 8 p.m. at Southwestern College.

“The past three or four years it seems like San Diego’s best teams have had to travel, so it’s nice to have a home game,” said Lincoln coach David Dunn. “We’re comfortable playing at Southwestern.

“It should be a very interesting game. They have a good quarterback (in Florida State commit Brady Smigiel) and love to throw the ball. They’re very solid, very disciplined.”

San Diego’s Open Division championship was two weeks ago, so Lincoln had a bye last week. The Hornets used the time to heal and bond.

“We gave the kids a little time off, had a light day Wednesday, then had a little prayer service on Thanksgiving,” Dunn said. “Friday we watched games. Saturday we had a light workout.

“Now it’s back to work.”

Granite Hills (11-2), San Diego’s Division 1 champion, is on the road Saturday at Huntington Beach Edison in a Division 1-A contest. The Chargers (10-4) are the Southern Section Division 3 champion.

“They’re big and physical,” Granite Hills coach Kellan Cobbs said of Edison. They have a good running back and a big quarterback.

“They have size and skill, but also have a lot of players going both ways, so maybe we can wear them down.”

Cobbs said he got an advance look at Edison while preparing to play Helix. Edison beat Helix 42-14. Granite Hills beat the Highlanders 35-21.

“You couldn’t help but notice the Edison guys while we were watching Helix,” Cobbs said.

“Going on the road to play doesn’t bother me. I know our fans will have to travel, but from a coaching and administrative standpoint, there is a lot less to deal with when you play on the road.”Winning in San Diego was always the goal. Now this is icing on the cake, a chance to play more football.”
