After 14 seasons, 11 in San Diego, The Honor Group has suspended future football showcases.
The Honor Bowl, which ran for three seasons at Oceanside High School and the last eight at Cathedral Catholic, annually attracted some of the best teams in the nation.
Billed as “More than just a game,” The Honor Group partnered in San Diego with the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton and the 5th Command, with some of the teams spending the day at Camp Pendleton.
A nonprofit organization, The Honor Group raised more than $200,000 for various military veteran charities and other injured, ill and wounded veteran causes.
The building of the Battle Cross before each game with Gold Star parents involved was especially emotional.
“Our initial focus when starting The Honor Bowl in 2000 was simply to find coaching friends to play football games to honor the Armed Forces and raise money to help returning veterans from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Mark Soto, co-founder and executive director of The Honor Group. “Looking back, we accomplished more than we expected.”
Cathedral Catholic, Helix, Granite Hills, Oceanside, Christian and University City played in the Honor Bowl over the years.
Last season’s Honor Bowl included a pair of girls flag football games for the first time.
