Intel’s new Twin Lake processors are basically Alder Lake-N chips with support for slightly higher CPU and GPU frequencies. So it’s unsurprising that PC makers who were already offering systems with Intel Alder Lake-N chips are now offering Twin Lake versions of those same systems.
We’ve seen a number of Alder Lake-N mini PCs updated with Twin lake chips. Now Topton has updated a mini ITX board for NAS systems by adding Intel N150 and Core 3 N355 Twin Lake processor options. The board is available from AliExpress for $169 and up.
This board has actually been around since late 2023, but it’s now available with several more processor options. What makes the 170 x 170mm (6.7″ x 6.7″) motherboard interesting is that it’s clearly made for networking and storage applications: you can set it up as a NAS, router, firewall, or general purpose server.
In addition to a choice of four different inexpensive, energy-efficient processor options, the board features:
Among other things, it features:
- 6 x SATA 3.0 connectors for hard drives or SSDs
- 2 x M.2 2280 slots with support for PCIe 3.0 x1 storage
- 1 x PCIe x1 connector
- 1 x SODIMM slot with support for up to 32GB of DDR5-5200 or DDR5-5600 memory
- 4 x 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports (Intel i226-V)
- 1 x HDMI 2.1 port
- 1 x DisplayPort 1.4b
- 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A
- 2 x USB 2.0 Type-A
- 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A
- 1 x 3.5mm audio
One thing to keep in mind is that Alder Lake N and Twin Lake processors only have 9 PCIe lanes, and this board has a lot of functions, which is why the M.2 2280 slots are each limited to single-lane PCIe 3.0 speeds. The board also has a PCIe slot that shares a lane with the second M.2 slot, which means you can use one or the other, but cannot use both at the same time.
The $169 starting price is for a motherboard with a 6-watt Intel N100 quad-core processor based on Alder Lake-N architecture, but you can pay $10 more for a model with a version with an Intel N150 Twin Lake chip that supports CPU and graphics speeds up to 200 MHz and 250 MHz faster, respectively.
If you’re looking for a little more performance, there are also models with Intel Core i3-N305 and Core 3 N355 chips. These are both 15-watt octa-core processors wither higher-performance graphics than you get with the N100/N150. Prices start at $279 for a model with a Core i3-N305 chip or $289 for a Core 3 N355 model (which supports CPU and GPU speeds that are only up to 100 MHz higher).
