ALEK JACOB

  • Position(s): Right-handed pitcher
  • Bats / Throws: Left / Right
  • 2024 opening day age: 26
  • Height / Weight: 6-foot-3 / 190 pounds
  • How acquired: 16th round in 2021 (Gonzaga)
  • Contract status: Will not be arbitration-eligible until 2028
  • fWAR in 2024: 0.2
  • Key 2024 stats: 0-0, 2.45 ERA, 0 saves, 0 holds, 19 strikeouts, 2 walks, 0.75 WHIP, .173 opponent average, 14⅔ innings (7 games)

STAT TO NOTE

  • 86.7 — Jacob’s average fastball velocity in miles per hour in 2024, which ranked in the bottom 1 percent in the majors. His extension (7.5 feet), however, ranked in the top 99 percent, which, coupled with a funky, side-slot delivery, helps Jacob’s fastball get on hitters quicker than expected.

TRENDING

  • Idle — A flexor strain and minor UCL sprain ended Jacob’s first year in the majors after just three games (3 IP, 0 H, 5 Ks), but Jacob did not require surgery and continued his success with San Diego in 2024, albeit wrapped around a difficult time at Triple-A El Paso. In 42 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Jacob struck out 65, walked 31 and allowed career-highs in opponent average (.294), ERA (5.53) and home run rate (2.01 per nine innings). That, of course, is more about the environment than Jacob, who also walked a career high 5.20 batters per nine innings. Which happens when you’re hurt so easily by contact in the PCL. That didn’t keep the Padres from calling up Jacob in late July and he expanded on his 2023 success in the majors while shuttling back and forth between Triple-A and the majors the rest of the season. Jacob was on both postseason rosters, too. He did not pitch in the wild-card round against the Braves, but he struck out two batters and allowed three runs — one earned — on a hit, a walk and a hit batter across two innings in the NLDS.

2025 OUTLOOK

  • With a sub-par fastball (see stat to note), Jacob relies on funky mechanics and deception to keep hitters off balance. His profile even has a chance to play up as the embodiment of a change-up wedged between power relief arms. Jacob will enter spring training looking to win his first opening day assignment in the bullpen.
