The Asus ROG XG Mobile is a compact graphics docking solution that debuted in 2021 as a companion for some Asus ROG gaming laptops and tablets. Thanks to a proprietary ROG XG Mobile connector, they were able to deliver 64 Gbps of data throughput for better performance than you’d get from a Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 dock. But that port also meant that the docks could only be used with the small handful of PCs released by Asus that had that port.
Now Asus has introduced the ROG XG Mobile (2025) graphics dock which does away with that proprietary port. Instead it has a Thunderbolt 5 port with support for bi-directional data transfer speeds as high as 80 Gbps.
Asus say the new ROX GX Mobile features “next-gen NVIDIA GeForce RTX” graphics, and the new eGPU is also 18 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter-weight than its predecessor. It’s 30mm (1.2 inches) thick and has a starting weight of 956 grams (2.1 pounds). It has a built-in 320 watt power supply, and the new ROG XG Mobile has an updated cooling system with fans that are about 3 dB quieter.
The new model has a semi-transparent case that lets you sort of, kind of see the internals, and the dock has a built-in kickstand that lets you prop it up vertically.
Asus has also updated its Armory Crate software that lets you configure performance settings so that if you use the new XG Mobile dock with an Asus ROG gaming laptop you’ll be able to set power modes on the laptop and eGPU independently of one another. You could run the laptop on balanced or power saving mode while the graphics dock is on performance mode, for example… or if you don’t need as much graphics performance, you can run the eGPU at a lower level than the laptop to help cut down on fan noise.
The dock features a set of ports that includes DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs, two USB Type-C ports, two USB Type-A ports, an Ethernet jack, and an SD card reader.
While the eGPU supports Thunderbolt 5, it’s also backward-compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4. That’s good news since there aren’t actually very many laptop or desktop computers with Thunderbolt 5 ports yet. So the good news is that the new dock should be compatible with far more PCs than previous models. Instead of a handful of Asus ROG gaming PCs, the new ROG XG Mobile (2025) should work with a wide variety of PCs that have Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB4 ports.
The less good news is that you’ll get data transfer speeds that are lower than the 64 Gbps supported by the ROG XG Mobile (2023) if you do decide to pair this eGPU with a device that doesn’t support Thunderbolt 5, which could limit performance, particularly when playing games at high display resolutions that require higher throughput.
