Atari has partnered with watch maker Nubeo to release a limited edition Asteroids Watch that puts imagery from the classic arcade game on your wrist.
Instead of a second or minutes hand, the watch has three rotating discs that move asteroids, UFOs, and a triangular ship independently. The watch sells for $499 and comes in seven color options… but there are only 125 units of each color available.
The spinning disc system is both clever and… a little confusing. The ship at the center of the watch functions as a second hand, taking exactly one minute to perform a full rotation.
There are also second and third rings that allow the asteroids and UFOs to rotate, with the UFOs functioning as the minute and hour hands. Each element glows in the dark, which should let you view watch at night without any illumination.
But the whole thing is visually cluttered in a way that makes me wonder how much time you’ll actually have to spend with this watch before you can tell the time with a quick glance.
The watch has a 50mm stainless steel case, a 24mm silicone strap, and a design that makes it water resistant at depths up to 20 ATM (you can dive underwater to depths of up to 200 meters).
It also comes in a case that’s designed to look like an Atari VCS, which is a nice touch.
While this is just the latest example of the company that currently owns the rights to the Atari name looking to cash in on nostalgic gamers, it comes at a time when Asteroids is celebrating its 45th anniversary, and I can certainly see this collectible appealing to nerds of a certain age.
