San Diego State didn’t have a very memorable season this year, but the Aztecs did have some memorable individual performances.
The Mountain West all-conference football teams were announced Tuesday and SDSU running back Marquez Cooper, edge Trey White and punter Tyler Pastula all earned first-team honors. Kicker Gabriel Plascencia was a second-team selection.
Five others — safety Eric Butler, cornerback Chris Johnson, linebacker Tano Letuli, wide receiver Jordan Napier and guard Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli — received honorable mention.
The four first- or second-team picks matched last year’s total, which was the fewest since only two Aztecs were honored in 2013.
Mountain West Player of the Year awards went to Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty (offensive), UNLV linebacker Jackson Woodard (defensive), UNLV wide receiver Ricky White III (special teams) and UNLV kicker Caden Chittenden (freshman).
Boise State coach Spencer Danielson was voted Mountain West Coach of the Year after positioning the Broncos (11-1, 7-0 MW) to be part of the new 12-team playoff. Boise State’s only loss was 37-34 to top-ranked Oregon on a last-second field goal.
No. 11 Boise State (11-1) will host No. 21 UNLV (10-2) on Friday in the Mountain West championship game.
The all-conference teams were selected in a vote of Mountain West head coaches and media.
Jeanty was honored for the second straight season. He has rushed for 2,288 yards this season, moving within 340 yards of the NCAA single season record 2,628 yards set by Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders in 1988.
Sanders’ single-season touchdown record of 37 will be more difficult to reach, though Jeanty has rushed for 28 TDs.
Last week, Jeanty broke the Mountain West record 2,248 yards set by SDSU’s Rashaad Penny in 2017.
Cooper ranks second in the Mountain West in rushing yards with 1,274 and third in rushing TDs with 12.
White led the Mountain West and is third in the nation with 12 1/2 sacks. It’s tied with Andy Coviello (12 1/2 in 1991) for the third-highest total in SDSU history, behind only Mike Douglass (21 in 1976) and Brett Faryniarz (13 in 1987).
Pastula led the Mountain West and is fourth in the nation with a 46.12 punting average. He led the conference with 17 punts of 50 yards or more, including a long of 79 yards.
Plascencia was 13-for-14 in field goals for a Mountain West-best 92.86 kicking percentage.
