SDSU at Air Force

When: 7 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Clune Arena, Air Force Academy

On the air: CBSSN; 760-AM

Records: SDSU is 11-5 (4-3); Air Force is 3-15 (0-7)

Series history: SDSU leads 66-24 and has won 10 straight, including 67-38 at Viejas Arena two weeks ago and 77-64 at Air Force last season.

Aztecs update: The 76-68 loss to UNLV was statistically their worst in five seasons, since also losing to the Rebels at Viejas Arena in 2020. This Rebels team is currently 97th in the Kenpom metric, one spot better than the 2020 Rebels. You have to go back to 2019 to find the last time the Aztecs lost to someone outside the top 200. That was 62-48 at Air Force. The Aztecs are 35-4 in their last 39 games following a loss, including 4-0 this season by an average of 11 points. They will wear their red uniforms instead of their usual road blacks. The reds were considered cursed by some in the program given a run of poor performances, but they’ve been better lately – 3-0 under coach Brian Dutcher, including a 74-57 win earlier this season against USD. It is only the 24th time they’re worn red in the last 500 games, with an 18-5 record. The focus in practice was on improving everywhere, after UNLV bettered the Aztecs in all the key statistical categories and scored the third-most points against them after Gonzaga (80) and Oregon (78). Reese Waters had another scan on the stress fracture in his right foot, and by all indications it went well, but Dutcher said the senior guard has not made a decision whether to play this season or redshirt.

Falcons update: They last won Dec. 7 and have dropped eight straight, a nonconference game against Northern Colorado and seven in the Mountain West. The losses have been closer since the 67-38 drubbing at Viejas Arena, where they had a pair of 10-minute droughts without a basket. They lost 69-62 at home against San Jose State, then 68-62 at Nevada and 74-65 at Fresno State last Friday in a battle of last-place teams. The Falcons rank at the bottom of the Mountain West in scoring (63.2 points per game) and are the only team shooting worse from the line (60.9%) than SDSU (67.7%). The Falcons are actually shooting better from the field (45.5%) than SDSU, which ranks 10th at 43.4%. Nearly 40% of their scoring comes from 3-pointers, which is tops in the conference. Senior guard Ethan Taylor (14.8 points, 5.8 rebounds) ranks seventh nationally in minutes per game (36.6) and is 19th in made 3s (57). Three came in the early moments at SDSU, when the Falcons led 20-8. Dutcher called timeout, and the Aztecs went on a 40-4 run. No one else averages more than 9.3 points per game (7-0 center Wesley Celichowsky) or 3.6 rebounds per game (Caleb Walker). Kyle Marshall ranks second among Mountain West freshmen at 7.7 points per game. Kenpom projects a 70-56 Aztecs win.

Next up: Saturday at Nevada (7 p.m., CBSSN)
