STAT TO NOTE

  • .797 — Sullivan’s OPS over parts of four seasons at Triple-A, including the last three years .918 and .832 campaigns the last two seasons in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.  Sullivan hit a career-high 17 homers in 101 games in 2024 (.263/.347/.485).

TRENDING

  • Idle — The Padres acquired Sullivan and a minor league outfielder (Korry Howell) from the Brewers when they moved on from Victor Caratini before the start of the 2022 season. Sullivan spent that entire season at Triple-A El Paso (.783 OPS) and then saw a rise in his stock in 2023 as he parlayed a strong showing in the World Baseball Classic into a move up the organization’s depth chart. He led all catchers in the tournament with seven hits and got the call to the majors in mid-April when a thumb sprain sent Luis Campusano to the shelf. Sullivan hit one home run in 86 plate appearances that season and one in 17 plate appearances in 2024 as again an injury fill-in for Campusano. A 17th-round draft pick of the Rays in 2015, Sullivan didn’t become a full-time catcher until 2016 and he’s continued to see action the last three years in the minors at third, first base and left field. Sullivan even played two games at first base in the majors and shagged balls in the outfield in spring training in hopes of increasing his value as a super utility player.

2025 OUTLOOK

  • At this point, the Padres have two catchers on the 40-man rosters: Sullivan and Campusano, who fell out of favor and finished the year at finished the season in El Paso. Sullivan is far from being considered a candidate to compete for the top spot on the depth chart, but he’s out of options and, without a significant addition to the position this winter, figures to vie for No. 2 status.
