STAT TO NOTE
- .461 — Opponents’ expected slugging off Hoeing in 2024, which ranked in the bottom 7 percent of the league. Expected slugging factors in, among other metrics, average exit velocity and Hoeing’s 90.9 mph average ranked in the bottom 4 percent of the league. Hoeing, however, allowed an actual slugging percentage of .316 and was better in San Diego (.272) than he was before the trade out of Miami (.272).
TRENDING
- Up — Even with the Marlins tearing down the team, Hoeing had not pegged himself for a trade out of Miami when he was stunned to find himself included in the Tanner Scott trade at the deadline. Luis Arraez and A.J. Puk had already been moved and Scott, as an All-Star, was sure to be gone as well as a pending free agent, but Hoeing had four more years of team control after 2024 and had yet to do much in the majors. Hoeing debuted in 2022 with a 12.08 ERA over 12⅔ innings, threw 70⅔ innings in 2023 (5.48 ERA) and was at least off to a strong start (2.70 ERA over 30 innings) when he joined Scott in the trade that sent prospects Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears to Miami. Scott immediately joined the Padres’ victory formation, while Hoeing stepped into a long-man role, striking out 18 against five walks while allowing a 1.52 ERA over 23⅔ innings. Hoeing topped out with 3⅔ shutout innings in a win in his second appearance in which he took the baton from Dylan Cease after a rain delay in Pittsburgh. Hoeing went on to log work between the fourth and eighth innings and appeared in two postseason games, allowing three runs across 2⅔ innings across three appearances.
2025 OUTLOOK
- Hoeing made two starts for the Marlins before the trade and started consistently in the minors as recently as 2022. With Joe Musgrove’s Tommy John surgery costing him the season, the Padres have all kinds of rotation questions entering the season, meaning Hoeing could get some run in spring training as a starting pitching candidate alongside Jhony Brito, Randy Vásquez and Matt Waldron. Either way, Hoeing proved himself a valuable piece as a long-man and should carve out a role of some kind in San Diego this season.
