Classical Academy continues flag football dominance; 3 others win section titles – San Diego Union-Tribune

For the past two seasons, Classic Academy has been the best girls flag football team in San Diego County.

Classical Academy capped off its masterful 2024 season by blowing out Torrey Pines 42-20 on Saturday at Palomar College, claiming the CIF San Diego Section Division 1 title and repeating as CIF champions.

“To have the kind of pressure these girls had them all year and play like they did was amazing,” said Classical Academy Coach Dan Salas.

It was a wire-to-wire win for the Caimans, who gave the Falcons little opportunity to stay in the ballgame. Classical vaulted to a commanding 28-6 first-half leadthanks to a pair of hookups between quarterback Ella Moore and wideout Justine Batcheller, the first of which came courtesy of a 22-yard strike up the seam.

“Ella Moore, I would love to give to any program on the West Coast or in the nation, because she would change every program,” Salas said. “Her IQ to see andread under pressure as a sophomore is something I have never seen. She is our glue.”

Out of the break, Classical Academy would quickly put the game on ice. On the first play of the half, Caimans sophomore defensive back Mary Hayes made anexcellent play on the ball in the air and returned it the other way for a pick-six, making it a 34-6 game and Extinguishing what hope Torrey Pines Had left.

Westview beats Carlsbad for Division 2 title

Westview quarterback Mya Omisore couldn’t miss during Saturday afternoon’s game against Carlsbad.

The junior threw for six touchdowns as Westview won 39-24 for the Division 2 championship. Four of her TD passes came in the first half, the longest being a 60-yard heave to Mia Jacobson.

Omisore connected with eight different receivers; Mia Jacobson, Niko Jacobson and Soraya Souvanaphong caught two touchdowns apiece.

“Mya has grown exponentially throughout this season,” Westview coach Rafael Guzman said. “She slowed the game down and was given the autonomy to check plays at the line. Her wideouts on the outside are all great athletes, making it easy for Mya to trust them.”

Mater Dei Catholic tops Scripps Ranch for Division 3 title

The Mater Dei Catholic secondary proved too difficult of a case for the Scripps Ranch offense to crack. Anabelle Gallagher led a Crusaders secondary that allowed just two scores and came away with four interceptions on the afternoon, and Mater Dei won 25-13 to capture the Division 3 crown.

Gallagher intercepted two passes, returning the second one 62 yards for a touchdown early in the second half.

The Mater Dei offense was far from perfect, but still made big plays when it needed to, including a 45-yard TD pass from quarterback Julianna Soto towideout Catherine Doherty.

“Our defense won us this football game,” Mater Dei Catholic coach Harry Ringgold said., “We told this girl to visualize what they were going to do before the game, and one of Anabelle’s visions was a pick-six. Anabelle, on that play, did exactly what we practiced.”

Olympian tops San Ysidro for Division 4 crown

Olympian’s stars led the team to a 21-6 win over San Ysidro in the Division 4 title game.

Quarterback Jaiden Liera and receiver Aubrey Tibayan were in sync from the jump, connecting on a 20-yard touchdown pass on the team’s first possession to take an early 7-0 lead on the Cougars.

The tandem would create more magic at the end of the first half on a 50-yard catch and run that not only put the Eagles ahead 21-6 at the half but also proved to be Olympian’s knockout punch.

“Aubrey and Jaiden set the tone,” Olympian coach Ryan Van Nostrand said. “San Ysidro had a quick score, and they bounced right back with that big 50-yarder. Aubrey is our spark plug through and through; as she goes, our team goes.”
