STAT TO NOTE
- 1.217 — Rosario’s OPS against left-handed pitching over 46 plate appearances in the majors, dating back to his debut in 2022. All five of Rosario’s home runs have come against lefties (.348/.348/.870), while he has a .146/.226/.146 batting line over 54 plate appearances against righties. Rosario was also better against lefties in the minors in 2024 (1.022 OPS) than righties (.810 OPS).
TRENDING
- Idle — The longest-tenured player in the organization, Rosario signed for $300,000 as an international amateur and had been one of the youngest players at each stop in the minors. He hit a career-high 22 homers at Triple-A El Paso in 2022 (.876 OPS) in earning his first call-up and has two 30-steal seasons on his resume, but he’s yet to have another longer than a bit role in the majors. Rosario filled in with a pair of homers in September 2023 when elbow trouble relegated Manny Machado to DH duty and he saw most of his 2024 time early in the season in the same capacity. In fact, Rosario appeared in 28 games through May 4 and just two games after that as he spent the rest of his time at Triple-A El Paso. There, he paired a .263/.361/.531 batting line with 21 homers, 70 RBIs and 19 steals while seeing most of his action at third base (67 games). Rosario, however, did also play shortstop (10) and second base (2) and got his first career action in right field (9) as he sought to increase his versatility. The Padres had a need, too, with Fernando Tatis Jr. missing a large chunk of the season to injury, but Rosario did not appear in a game in the majors after July 2 and was not included on either postseason roster.
2025 OUTLOOK
- Out of minor league options, Rosario will enter spring training looking to win a bench role, likely akin to the one that Donovan Solano filled in 2024. Rosario could back up Machado at third, see time at second base and perhaps bounce between the corner outfield spots.
