Two-time series champion Eli Tomac scored the 53rd win of his Supercross career Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium.

The 32-year-old Tomac, from Cortez, Colo., rode his Yamaha to a 1.52-second victory over defending series champion Jett Lawrence of Australia in the 24-lap main event for 450cc motorcycles. Tomac ranks second on the all-time list of Supercross winners.

Cooper Webb (Newport, N.C., Yamaha) finished third followed by Germany’s Ken Roczen (Suzuki), Lawrence’s brother Hunter (Honda) and Chase Sexton (KTM), who won the season opener last Saturday in Anaheim.

Vince Friese (Honda) won the holeshot leaving the starting line but Webb quickly took the lead ahead of Roczen. Webb led by 1 ½ seconds after two laps with Hunter Lawrence third, Tomac fourth and Jett Lawrence fifth.

Although Roczen was slowly gaining on Webb, Tomac moved into second on the 11th lap and Jett Lawrence into third. Midway through the race, the four leaders were bunched in a two-second window.

Tomac took the lead at the start of lap 13 with Lawrence moving into second. Defending champion Aron Plessinger failed to finish.

Sexton paced the 450cc qualifying with a fast lap of 51.566 seconds. Jett Lawrence was second (51.634 seconds) followed by Tomac (51.987). Former series champions swept the top six qualifying spots. Plessinger qualified 12th.

Lawrence won the first 450cc heat by five seconds over Webb with Jason Anderson third. Tomac took the holeshot off the line of the second heat and held off Sexton at the finish to win with Roczen third.

Julien Beaumer of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., rode his KTM to a 3.1-second victory over North Carolina’s Jordan Smith (Triumph) in the 18-lap 250cc main event. Haiden Deegan was third on a Yamaha with teammate Cole Davies fourth.

Beaumer was sixth out of the starting gate but moved into second on the second lap and took the lead away from Davies on the ninth lap.

Temecula’s Deegan paced the 250cc qualifying with a lap of 52.848 seconds. Ramona’s Billy Laninovich qualified 32nd in the 250cc support division and did not qualify for the main event.

Garrett Marchbanks and Davies won the 250cc heats. Laninovich failed to finish his heat.
