For the 10th time in 30 years, Fallbrook High School is looking for a head football coach.

Ross Johnson has stepped down after a three-year stint. The Warriors, who haven’t had a head coach for more than five years since Tom Pack’s 15-year run from 1978-94, were 14-22 under Johnson but 0-11 last season.

“Ross stepping down has nothing to do with last season,” said Fallbrook Athletic Director Patrick Walker. “He did a great job, but he wanted to spend more time with his family.”

Johnson’s children are 5 and 3.

“Being a head coach is a significant time commitment,” said Johnson, who can teach PE, health or math. “I love coaching. I’m open to being an assistant coach, but I need to spend more time at home.

“Last season was tough. We only had five returning players and three got hurt before we took a snap. We took our lumps, but 10 sophomores or freshmen took meaningful snaps, so there is hope.”

Fallbrook is 112-212-2 since Pack left the program with three winless seasons and seven one-win campaigns.

The high-water mark was a CIF championship in 2000 under Randy Blankenship.

Walker said he has had “several inquiries from highly qualified candidates” about the job and hopes to name a successor sooner rather than later.
