San Diego State added depth in the defensive secondary and size along the offensive line with two more commitments from the NCAA transfer portal.

New Mexico State transfer safety Josiah Cox and Howard University offensive lineman Cam May boost to 19 the number of new players the Aztecs have added through the portal.

Cox’s name should sound familiar. He earned 2022 San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year honors after helping Lincoln High School to the school’s first state championship.

Cox had more than 100 tackles for the Hornets that season. He received a dozen scholarship offers, including one from SDSU, before choosing Arizona State.

At the time, the 6-foot-2 Cox said the deciding factor would be “wherever feels like home.”

He stayed at ASU for one season, then transferred to New Mexico State, where Cox collected 35 tackles and a pair of interceptions for the Aggies.

He then realized you can go home again by committing to SDSU.

Lincoln coach David Dunn told the Union-Tribune during Cox’s senior season that “he definitely plays with that edge that every football coach loves to have on defense. He doesn’t want to play. He wants to dominate.”

Cox will compete in spring practice for a starting spot in an Aztecs secondary that includes three returning starting safeties — Chris Johnson, Eric Butler and Dalesean Staley.

They will be looking across a line that has gotten taller and taller.

May is a 6-8, 310-pound junior from Detroit who played left tackle for Howard.

His addition gives the Aztecs four players on the O-line who stand 6-8, joining returners Christian Jones and Joe Borjon and transfer Mason “Yeti” Baker.

Also joining the Aztecs is 6-9 offensive lineman Ashdon Wnetrzak, a Class of 2025 signee from Sierra Canyon High School. Wnetrzak was among 18 players who signed with SDSU during the December early signing period.

The Aztecs now have 19 transfer commitments for the 2025 season. They had 20 players, but Cal Poly cornerback Kai Rapolla de- commited Dec. 30, just days after visiting and committing to SDSU.

Transfer portal commitments are not official until players attend their first class. SDSU’s spring semester begins Jan. 21.
