San Diego Clippers coach Paul Hewitt sometimes resembles a third-base coach, waving his arms forward rapidly, exhorting his players to race the ball up the floor after a rebound or forced turnover.
That approach has helped the Clippers (4-1) average an NBA G League-high 125.6 points per game so far this season. The points come in all manner of ways, including several alley-oop dunks.
The energy was particularly electric during Wednesday’s 112-110 win over the South Bay Lakers at the sparkling new Frontwave Arena in Oceanside.
Guard Elijah Harkless scored a career-high 28 points and credited the Frontwave crowd for helping the Clippers play their fast-paced style, which involves fast breaks and crisp ball movement.
“They feed off us and we feed off them,” Harkless said. “This is the best building I’ve played in in the G League by far. It’s fun.”
The Clippers hit the road to visit South Bay on Tuesday and Portland’s Rip City Remix on Nov. 29 before hosting the Stockton Kings Dec. 1 and Dec. 3.
Tritons win, advance in Florida
Tyler McGhie scored 27 points, Nordain Kapic added 18 points with 10 rebounds and Hayden Gray finished with 14 points and four steals as UC San Diego (3-2) earned a 72-64 win over LaSalle (4-1) on Wednesday in the first round of the Boardwalk Battle tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Neither team shot well, but the Tritons made 11 three-pointers to LaSalle’s seven, forced 15 LaSalle turnovers and held the Explorers scoreless for a seven-minute stretch of the second half.
The Tritons face James Madison (3-2) Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Dukes defeated Illinois-Chicago in the first round.
“Ultimately this was a good win against a quality team,” Tritons coach Eric Olen said. “There are plenty of things we need to clean up before tomorrow — too many missed shots — but overall, to beat a team like that in a tournament environment is a good start to the weekend.”
Sea Lions beat Cal State San Marcos, face big road test
The best way for a good shooter to snap out of a rough patch is to keep on shooting.
That’s the approach Point Loma Nazarene sophomore guard Tyce Paulsen took in the team’s 81-64 win over Cal State San Marcos in PLNU’s home opener Tuesday night.
Paulsen, who had made only four of his previous 18 attempts from long range, scored a career-high 30 points and hit 8 of 10 from long range.
“They kept going under (screens) and either way I was just going to keep letting it fly,” Paulsen said. “My teammates kept finding me and they were falling tonight.”
Next up, Paulsen and the Sea Lions (5-1) travel to face No. 12 Saint Martin’s (7-0) Saturday night in Lacey, Wash.
PLNU should be prepared. The Sea Lions’ nomadic start has seen them play an exhibition game at No. 17 Arizona, a pair of games in Lakeland, Fla., followed by a pair of games in Hayward and a game at Cal State San Bernardino.
“To be the best, you have to play the best, and we’ve traveled everywhere to do it,” coach Justin Downer said. “We’ve seen so many teams that play so many styles, I can say, we have played against every style of defense and for the most part, we’ve been able to play well.”
Toreros face busy weekend
USD (1-3) hosts Southern Utah (4-1) Friday at 7 p.m. and Idaho (2-3) Sunday at 2 p.m at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The Toreros are coming off a 78-66 home loss to Idaho State on Saturday. Sunday’s game against Idaho will stream via ESPN+.
