The HP Z2 Mini G1a is a small desktop computer with designed to offer the performance a workstation in a compact package. HP says the system is eight times smaller than desktop tower, while using around half as much power.
But thanks to an AMD Strix Halo processor, it’s a graphics and AI powerhouse with an integrated GPU featuring up to 40 RDNA 3.5 cores, support for up to 128GB of unified memory (three quarters of which can be used for graphics memory), and an NPU with up to 50 TOPS of AI performance. When you leverage the Z2 Mini G1a’s CPU, NPU, and GPU together, the system supports up to 125 TOPS of AI performance.
Measuring 200 x 168 x 86mm (7.9″ x 6.6″ x 3.4″), the Z2 Mini G1a is about twice the size of some mini PCs, and weighing 2.3 kg (5.1 pounds), it feels like a pretty substantial system. Not only does it take up less space on a desk, but it can also be mounted to the back of a display or stacked into a high-density rack mount system – HP says you can fit five units across in a 4U rack.
But it packs a lot of power into that case… and a 300W integrated power supply to keep everything running.
HP says processor options range from a Ryzen AI Max PRO 380 (6-core, 12-thread processor with Radeon 8040S graphics) to a Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 chip (16 cores, 32 threads, and Radeon 8060S graphics). Each of those chips features a 50 TOPS Ryzen AI NPU.
Since the computer features LPDDR5x-8000 memory, the RAM is not user upgradeable. But with support for up to 128GB of ECC memory, the system can be configured with enough memory to meet most use cases.
You can also add up to 8TB of PCIe 4.0 x 4 NVMe storage thanks to two M.2 2280 slots, and the computer supports RAID data storage configurations. There’s also an M.2 2230 slot for a wireless card with support for WiFi 7.
Ports include:
- 2 x Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps)
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbps w/USB-PD and DP 2.1)
- 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (10 Gbps)
- 2 x USB 2.0 Type-A (480 Mbps)
- 2 x Mini DisplayPort 2.1
- 1 x 3.5mm audio combo
- 1 x RJ-45
There’s also a Flex IO section that allows customers to choose to add ports including Gigabit, 2.5 GbE, or 10 GbE LAN, USB Type-C or Type-A ports, or Serial ports.
The computer also has a built-in 2 watt speaker.
HP says the Z2 Mini G1 should be available this spring for around $1200 and up. Meanwhile, if you want similar performance in a laptop form factor, the HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a is a mobile workstation with the same processor. it doesn’t have as many ports or storage expansion slots as the desktop, but it comes with a keyboard, touchpad, display and battery, and it should hit the streets this spring for around $1500 and up.
