San Diego has a new all-time wins leader in girls basketball, and it’s Terri Bamford.

The La Jolla Country Day coach ascended to No. 1 all-time with Friday’s 42-39 home win over Stockton St. Mary’s. Her 727 all-time victories are one more than Poway’s Jay Trousdale, who retired three years ago.

Bamford entered this season with 723 wins. After losing the season opener, the Torreys defeated Corona Santiago and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Notre Dame Prep. Thursday’s 81-36 win over Marlborough pulled Bamford even with Trousdale with 726 wins.

Wade Vickery (Santana) is now third all-time in San Diego with 610 wins, followed by Robbie Sandoval with 568, Ray Jindra with 556 and Peggy Brose with 521.

Bamford’s win total ranks No. 8 all-time in the state.

The leader of San Diego’s biggest girls basketball dynasty, Bamford has coached McDonald’s All-Americans Candice Wiggins, Kelsey Plum, Jada Williams, Breya Cunningham and Te-Hina Paopao as well as CIF San Diego Section Players of the Year Maya Hood, Ariana Elegado, Mercedes Fox-Griffin, Janae Fulcher and Dominique Conners.

Wiggins was a four-time CIF San Diego Section Player of the Year before starring at Stanford and the WNBA. Plum, a University of Washington graduate, remains one of the WNBA’s most popular players.

This year’s Torreys are led by the Princeton-bound Mei-Ling Perry in addition to Mahlia Washington and Safiyah Sugapong.

Bamford is in her 30th season as a head coach, the last 28 at La Jolla Country Day. The Torreys’ best season came in 2019-20; they were 32-1 and ranked No. 1 in the nation when the season ended early due to COVID-19 concerns.

Cal-Hi Sports, MaxPreps.com and others declared LJCD the mythical national champions.

Bamford annually plays one the state’s toughest schedules, competing against powerhouses like Lynwood, Brea-Olinda, Santa Ana Mater Dei, San Jose Archbishop Mitty and recently Etiwanda and Sierra Canyon.

Despite the rigorous approach, Bamford has never had a losing season.
