The Lenovo ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition and Lenovo ThinkPad 15 Aura Edition are laptops with up to a 2.8K OLED 120 Hz touchscreen display, up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 Lunar Lake processor, and compact designs: both models are about 0.7 inches thick and the 15 inch model weighs just 3.2 pounds while the 14 inch version is just 2.7 pounds.
But the thing that really makes these laptops unusual? They don’t look much like any other member of the Lenovo ThinkPad family. As expected, the Lenovo Thinkpad X9 has a grey body rather than the typical ThinkPad black chassis. And there’s no Lenovo TrackPoint system. Instead these laptops have a large haptic trackpad below the keyboard, but no pointing stick in the center of the keyboard.
While that’s likely to prove controversial with long-time TrackPoint fans, it’s not the only thing that makes the ThinkPad X9 unusual. Lenovo has also redesigned the chassis with a grooved metal bottom cover, and sides with rounded edges (except for the sections with ports, which are flat).
Lenovo says the new design features an “engine hub” with “a streamlined housing for critical components and connections that optimizes cooling and performance” while making the laptop easier to service and repair by “removing the D cover” to access the battery and SSD.
Both laptops have two Thunderbolt 4 ports – one on each side, as well a HDMI 2.1 and audio ports. Both have 8MP IR cameras with privacy shutters, support for WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, and support for up to 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory and up to 2TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage.
While the ThinkPad X9 15 is a little bigger and heavier, it also adds a few extra features: the model with a 15.3 inch display has a USB Type-A port, while the 14 inch model does not. The larger model has four speakers, while the smaller notebook has two. And the Thinkpad X9 15 has an 80 Wh battery, compared with 55 Wh for the ThinkPad X9 14.
