Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop for Business is a laptop with support for up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V Lunar Lake processor, 32GB of LPDDR5x memory, and a choice of 13.8 inch or 15 inch IPS LCD displays with 201 pixels per inch, 120 Hz refresh rates, and 3:2 aspect ratios.
And the new Surface Pro for Business comes with the same processor options. But it’s a 13 inch tablet with a 267 PPI 120 Hz display that comes in OLED or LCD options. Both the laptop and tablet should be available starting February 18, 2025 for $1500 and up.
Microsoft is positioning both of these new devices as Copilot+ PCs for business customers – so while regular folks will probably be able to purchase them shortly after launch, those high starting prices are likely to be a turnoff.
Meanwhile folks looking for the latest consumer versions of these devices will have to opt for models with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series processors – last May Microsoft introduced versions of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro featuring support for up to a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip.
While the Snapdragon chips that power those consumer models pack enough performance for most common tasks, they still struggle with some apps and games that aren’t designed natively for ARM architecture, which may be one reason why Microsoft is opting for Intel’s Lunar Lake chips based on x86_64 architecture for its business edition Surface devices. These chips have NPUs that match or exceed what you’d expect from a Snapdragon X chip while offering significantly more powerful integrated graphics and better compatibility with the kinds of legacy apps that business customers might require.
That said, it’d be nice if there were consumer versions of these laptops because I suspect some folks in the market for a Surface tablet or laptop for personal use might prefer Intel over ARM as well. The new Surface Laptop for Business with Lunar Lake will also be the first Surface-branded laptop with support for optional 5G connectivity, although the Surface Laptop 5G isn’t expected to arrive until later this year.
