PLNU tightens grip on PacWest with men’s, women’s basketball sweep in Hawaii – elcajon newson Elcajon News only

While San Diego’s NCAA Division I basketball teams struggled over the weekend, the Division II men’s and women’s programs from Point Loma Nazarene each completed a two-game sweep in Hawaii to strengthen their holds on first place in the PacWest Conference.

The Sea Lions men defeated Hawaii Pacific 89-57 Friday after defeating Hawaii Hilo 67-57 Thursday to improve to 14-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The women (13-3, 8-0) defeated Hilo 58-55 and Pacific 69-49.

Senior guard Zackry Paulsen paced the PLNU men with 40 points in the two games in Hawaii, including 29 Saturday on 11-for-12 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-5 from three-point range. Junior forward Andrew Hommes had 25 in the two games, including 16 on Saturday. Senior forward Luke Haupt (St. Augustine High School) had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the two games while senior forward Wynton Brown had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Zackry Paulsen leads PLNU with a 15.0 scoring average while Haupt is second in scoring (13.7 points per game) and leads in rebounding (5.5).

The PLNU women, who have won 11 straight games, were paced by junior center Eiley Tippins (21 points, 19 rebounds) in the two Hawaii games. Senior guard Tavia Rowell scored 22 points. Forward Alli McDonald had 17 points and 19 rebounds, point guard Kaylee Byon had 17 points and 11 assists and junior guard Grace Moyers scored 15 against Pacific.

Elsewhere:

• Guard Nat Martinez was named the Freshman of the Week in the Mountain West Conference this week, scoring 26 points while going 9-for-11 from the field as the San Diego State women (13-5, 2-3 Mountain West) won at Nevada 81-62 before losing 78-71 at Wyoming. Forward Adryana Quezada scored 20 points and point guard Veronica Sheffey added 18 against Nevada. Forward Cali Clark had season-bests of 18 points and 13 rebounds Saturday, while Martinez and Sheffey each scored 15.

• The UC San Diego women’s basketball team (6-11, 2-3) lost road games at Cal Poly (61-56) and UC Irvine (73-66) as sophomore guard Sumayah Sugapong scored 34 points in the two games and Mia Sabina added 28.

• USD’s women’s basketball team (4-11, 0-6) lost at Santa Clara (67-59) Saturday after Thursday’s game at Loyola Marymount was postponed due to the Los Angeles-area wildfires.

• San Diego State’s Valentina Lopez Arevalo scored a sweep at the Lancer Diving Invitational at Riverside, winning the platform plus the 1 and 3-meter board titles. Aztec Summer Westmoreland placed fourth in the platform, seventh in the one-meter and eighth in the three-meter. The Aztec swimming team also won the University of San Diego Invitational.  UC San Diego’s men’s and women’s dual meet at USC was canceled due to the wildfires.

• The San Diego City College and Palomar College men’s basketball teams appear to be streaking toward Jan. 22 and Feb. 21 showdowns for the PCAC title. The Knights have won six straight, are 13-4 and ranked ninth in the state. Palomar has won eight straight, are 12-5 overall and ranked 17th. San Diego City last week had wins of 70-47 at Cuyamaca and 55-43 over Miramar at home. The Comets defeated Miramar (80-61) at home and Imperial Valley (92-67) in El Centro.

The Knights lead the state in team defense with 61.9 points a game allowed. They’re led by Torrey Pines High School grad Logan Huston (14.2 points a game), Mater Dei Catholic grad Kenny Gonzalez (12.9 ppg) and Escondido Charter grad Marley Gonzalez (9.9 ppg). Palomar College is led by Torrey Pines High School grad Max Zylicz (13.5 ppg) and Jaidyn Norman (13.1 ppg) and Isiah Tolmaire (12.8 ppg). El Camino High School product Isiah Pomare averages 11.5 points per game.

• Mission Hills High School grad Kylee Trujillo scored 42 points in the two games as the Palomar College women opened PCAC play with home wins over Mesa (79-69) and San Diego City (90-59). Grossmont College (13-2) scored road wins over Cuyamaca (107-48) and MiraCosta (82-48) behind 41 points from Morse High School grad Kyla Palpallatoc, 33 from Steel Canyon High School grad Janea Wilson (Steele Canyon) and 31 from Kiya Waters.
