For the Throne dual meet
Who: State No. 1 Clovis Buchanan at state No. 3 Poway.
When: Noon Saturday
About Buchanan: The Bears have dominated the state for the past decade, winning seven straight titles between 2016 and 2023 before finishing second a year ago. They return eight state place-winners, with three Bears — freshman Paul Ruiz (113), junior Oregon State commit Rocklin Zinkin (120) and senior Leo Contino (157) — currently ranked No. 1 in the state for their weight class. Cornell-bound junior Joseph Toscano, a state finalist last year, is ranked No. 2 at 144 pounds.
Poway: The Titans are the ones who ended Buchanan’s run of state titles last year, capturing their fifth team title in record fashion. They set a state record for most points in state meet with 290.5 points and 12 medalists, topping Buchanan by 35 points. Leading the way for Poway is unbeaten defending state champion Angelo Posada. The Stanford-bound senior won the 175-pound title last year and is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 3 in the country at 215 pounds. Stanford commit Edwin Sierra fell to Buchanan’s Zinkin 2-1 in overtime for the 113-pound title. He is currently ranked No. 2 at 120 pounds, behind Zinkin. Mario Carini, who was third at state last year as a freshman at 144, is currently ranked No. 1 in the state at 165.
Series record: Buchanan holds a 3-1 series advantage in dual meets. The Titans’ lone victory came last year, when they won eight of the 14 bouts to edge the Bears 28-26 in a match held at Fresno City College.
