CHULA VISTA — In a game that defies description, Poway High School scored six times in the second half, turning a close game into a rout on the way to a 62-24 CIF San Diego Section Division 2 championship game win over Mater Dei Catholic on Friday night.

Poway, the No. 4 seed, advances to the Southern California Regionals with a 6-7 record. Mater Dei Catholic, seeded No. 2, sees its season end at 9-4.

“The record doesn’t indicate what kind of team we are,” said Poway coach Brandon Harris. “We’re 3-0 in the record that counts. That’s the playoffs. We’re undefeated, and we’re a tough out.”

It’s possible to describe Luke Jorgensen’s 16 carries for 128 and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

“I was locked in,” said Jorgensen. “I know I kind of look like I’m jogging, then I kind of bounce off people. Sometimes I surprise myself. I think I should go down, then I just keep going.”

It’s possible to describe Colin McCann’s five pass receptions for 168 and TDs of 18, 37 and 66 yards. And, for that matter, his 14-yard TD run on a jet sweep. And it’s possible to describe quarterback Ty Hurst’s 198 yards.

What is hard to describe is a game with 34 penalties for 230 yards — 22 for 185 against Mater Dei Catholic and 12 for 145 yards against Poway. Another six penalties were declined.

There were several plays with multiple fouls. Several plays with unsportsmanlike calls.

Poway had lost six games in a row coming into the playoffs. The Titans were 0-6 in the Avocado League.

But Poway beat Point Loma 28-7 in the quarterfinals and laid a school record 63 on University City last week. Cathedral Catholic had won nine in a row after an 0-3 start. The Crusaders were champions of the Metro Mesa League.

“We’d get a few plays here and there, then the flags would come in and we just couldn’t get anything together,” said Mater Dei Catholic coach Rashard Cook. “We could have closed it and taken a 24-21 lead and it would have been a whole different thing. It was just unfortunate. It wasn’t up to our standards.”

Poway rolled up 345 yards total offense, scored on a blocked punt and recovered an onside kick. Mater Dei Catholic 335 yards.

In one of the more bizarre first halves of the season, Mater Dei Catholic was 13 times for 85 yards while Poway was hit with seven penalties for 85 yards.

Poway scored first on a 37-yard pass from Hurst to McCann. Mater Dei Catholic got a 33-yard field goal from Angel Mendoza, but Poway hit the Crusaders with an 89-yard kickoff return by McCann, leading to an 11-yard Luke Jorgensen TD run. Mater Dei Catholic was forced to punt after a drive that featured six Crusaders penalties.

Poway took advantage with a 30-yard drive, ending with a 1-yard run by Jake Tsay.

Mater Dei Catholic got right back in the game with a 73-yard scoring pass from Kartell Purvis to Julian Cromartie.

Poway, however, failed to convert on first-and-goal from the one. Out of timeouts and with 14 seconds to play in the half, the Titans handed the ball to Jorgensen, who was stopped as time ran out.
