It has been an exceptional high school football season in San Diego.
With great runners, passers and receivers, the CIF Record Book is being rewritten.
With Lincoln, El Capitan and Monte Vista playing for state titles this weekend, following is a look at some of the season’s numbers:
• Monte Vista running back Alexander Villanueva has one more game to play, and the senior already is the San Diego Section’s all-time single-season rusher. With 145 rushing yards against Pasadena last week in the Southern California Regional 6-A championship game, the senior now has 3,151 yards on the season. That breaks the record of 2,974 set by Mission Bay’s Dillon Baxter in 2009. Villanueva zoomed past legendary Monte Vista runner Jahmon McClendon, who had 2,638 yards in 2018.
• Granite Hills scored a CIF San Diego Section 11-man record 90 points in a 90-46 win over Grossmont. Granite Hills and Grossmont combined for a section=record 136 points in that game.
• Kearny quarterback Brodie Stump finished his career with 773 completions, second only to La Jolla Country Day’s Braxton Burmeister, who had 853 from 2013-15. Burmeister and Stump are the only San Diego Section players to complete 700 career passes. Stump had 106 career touchdown passes, third all-time behind Burmeister’s 127 and 114 by Jeffrey Jackson of Bishop’s from 2015-17. Those players are the only three with 100 or more career TD passes. Stump’s 295 completions is second to Burmeister’s 312 in 2016.
• Stump finishes his career with 10,468 total yards in his career, putting him third all-time behind Burmeister (14,972) and Jacobo Ellis (10,820) of Vincent Memorial. Stump’s 9,495 career passing yards is second only to Burmeister (11,512).
• Tommy Donovan of Grossmont threw 53 TD passes this season, tying Tyler Buchner of Bishop’s and Burmeister for second all-time. EJ Kreutzmann of La Jolla Country Day has the record at 57.
• Grossmont receiver Noah Walker finished the season with a section record 114 catches. That breaks the record of 110 set by Jahiem Allen Pompey of Mount Miguel in 2019.
• Ty Olsen, who started his career at Del Norte and is now at Lincoln, has 4,030 career receiving yards, No. 1 all-time in the section. He passed Mozes Mooney of Bishop’s, who had 3,954 from 2015-17. Jase Nix of San Marcos finished with 3,304 yards, third all-time. Olsen has 50 career TD receptions, second to the 66 set by Mooney. Nix is third all-time with 48 career receiving TDs.
• Silas Christiansen of Rancho Bernardo set a section record with five kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Looking ahead, San Marcos junior QB Kreet Makihele has 525 career completions for 7,771 yards and 95 TDs. He’s on pace to set several records. Kearny junior receiver Zaiden Gravely has 201 career catches for 2,539 yards and 21 TDs, and could break records next year.
Season’s leaders
Donovan led the section with 4,134 passing yards this season. He’s one of four QBs who topped 3,000 passing yards.
• Walker’s 1,590 receiving yards led the section. There were 10 players with over 1,000 yards receiving this season.
• Jake Williams of El Camino led the section with 157 tackles. There were 31 players with 100 or more tackles.
• Mateo Bresenden of Westview was the sack leader with 21 1/2. He was followed by Daniel Stehly of Valley Center with 20. Overall, there were 12 players with at least 10 sacks.
• Parker Vance of Granite Hills led the section with nine interceptions.
Coaching record
Monte Vista coach Ron Hamamoto has 10 wins this season with a game to play. He now has 246 career victories over 39 seasons spent at USDHS (now Cathedral), Rancho Bernardo, Lincoln and Monte Vista. He is third all-time in wins behind Herb Meyer, who had 339 wins in 35 years at Oceanside and El Camino, and John Carroll, who had 246 wins in 26 years at Oceanside.
