Earlier this month Pocketbook unveiled the InkPoster line of digital posters that you can use to hang digital artwork on your walls. With E Ink Spectra 6 color displays, InkPoster products offer paper-like visuals with support for up to 60,000 colors. But they’re expensive, with pries starting at $599 for a model with a 13.3 inch display.
A startup called Creative Design Worx is running a crowdfunding campaign for a digital poster that sells for about half that price. The Reflection Frame has a 13.3 inch E Ink Spectra 6 display, but it has a suggested retail price of just $329, and Early Bird backers of a Kickstarter campaign can reserve one for $249. Keep in mind that there’s always some risk involved in backing a crowdfunding campaign though.
In this case, the company promising to deliver the digital poster says that it’s sourced components from Asian manufacturers and assembled some prototypes ahead of an estimated April, 2025 ship date. But the suspiciously low price has left some commenters questioning the viability of this project.
This ePaper poster is missing some features that you’d find on other digital photo frames though. There’s no WiFi, for example, and no SD card reader. The only way to transfer photos to the frame or change the image on display is by using a smartphone app.
The initial connection is made via NFC, and then the image is transferred over a Bluetooth Low Energy connection.
On the one hand, this means that you have a very simple device that’s easy to set up and use. It also has extraordinarily long battery life – the built-in rechargeable battery should be good for up to 2 years or 3,000 image changes.
On the other hand, you need to use the smartphone app to do anything with the Reflection Frame. So if the company disappears in the future and/or stops supporting the app, it’s not clear whether you’ll be able to continue using the digital poster.
The display area of the Reflection Frame measures 268.9 x 201.3mm (10.6″ x 7.9″), but it’s positioned in a larger frame with a mat, so the whole thing measures 398.9 x 291.3mm (15.7″ x 11.5″) and weighs 1.1 kg (2.4 pounds).
