San Diego’s two major professional soccer teams will play in the same Indio exhibition series as they prepare for their 2025 seasons.

San Diego FC, Major League Soccer’s newest franchise, will play New York City FC, the Portland Timbers and the New York Red Bulls as part of the Coachella Valley Invitational. The February preseason showcase features 14 MLS teams and six National Women’s Soccer League teams — including the San Diego Wave FC.

San Diego FC’s first match against NYC FC is scheduled for Feb. 8 at noon. The club will take on Portland on Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m., and face the Red Bulls Feb. 15 at 10 a.m.

The Wave will face the Houston Dash on Feb. 16 at noon and Bay FC on Feb. 22 at 11:30 a.m.

All matches will be played at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, which contains two soccer fields and a warm-up pitch. Tickers for the Coachella Valley Invitational go on sale Wednesday at coachellavalleyinvitational.com.

It’s been a busy December for San Diego FC, which is trying to assemble a roster, sell tickets and build momentum with its March 1 home opener just over two months away. Last week alone, the club selected five players and made two trades as part of the MLS expansion draft, dealt with the Red Bulls for Colombian defender Andres Reyes, and selected goalkeeper Jacob Jackson, an Escondido native, in the MLS re-entry draft.

Up next is Friday’s MLS SuperDraft. San Diego FC will pick first overall and ninth overall.

San Diego FC players will report to training camp on Jan. 11, with their first practice scheduled for two days later. The club will face Phoenix Rising of USL Championship in a closed-door scrimmage on Jan. 25, and do the same against the Sacramento Republic on Feb. 1. San Diego FC will then travel to Coachella for its first public scrimmages.

While San Diego FC is building a roster, the Wave are overhauling theirs. The club has a new ownership group and general manager to start 2025, and is in the process of hiring a new coach after employing three during a disappointing 2024 season, one that saw star Alex Morgan retire and Abby Dahlkemper engineer a trade to Bay FC.

The Wave’s 2025 schedule has yet to be announced. San Diego FC’s full schedule will be released later this week.
