San Diego State’s women’s basketball and diving teams had strong showings last weekend.
The Aztecs women’s basketball team improved to 9-1 with Friday’s 107-36 victory over Bethesda before a record turnout of 6,906 fans, bolstered by busloads of elementary school students.
Freshman Naomi Panganiban led the Aztecs with 27 points in 22 minutes off the bench; the La Jolla Country Day product hit 6 of 8 attempts from 3-point range. Adryana Quezada had 15 points and 16 rebounds in 21 minutes.
Led by platform winner Valentina Lopez Arevalo, Aztec divers turned in an all-around strong performance at the Riverside Diving Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
Summer Westmoreland placed second in both the platform and 1-meter competitions and placed fifth in the 3-meter springboard. Lopez Arevalo was third in the 3-meter and fourth in the 1-meter. Alina Skrocki was second in the 3-meter, eighth in the 1-meter and 10th in platform. Jessica Schroeder was fifth in the 1-meter, while Olivia Zamudio was sixth in the 3-meter. Taylor Konopacke was sixth in platform.

• Defending California Community College women’s volleyball champion Mesa College lost 3-1 to Fresno City College in the semifinals of the state tournament despite 15 kills apiece from Bella Town and Halen Kiefer.
• Mesa College’s women’s basketball team improved to 8-1 after winning the Santa Ana College Tournament, defeating host Santa Ana 57-44, Los Angeles Harbor 80-30 and Riverside 63-58 in the championship game. Sophomore Alethze Marquez (Helix High School) averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds over the three games to earn the tournament Most Valuable Player award. Sophomore guard Alivia Gillespie (Oceanside High School) averaged 11 points and nine rebounds in the three games and had six steals in the championship game.
• The UC San Diego men’s basketball team (8-2) opened Big West Conference play with wins at UC Santa Barbara (84-76) and over Cal State Bakersfield (81-70) at home. Junior forward Nordin Kapic had 44 total points and eight rebounds in the two wins. Senior forward Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones had 30 combined points and 13 combined rebounds.
• Sophomore guard Gracie Gallegos had 20 points as the UCSD women won 55-40 at Cal State Bakersfield to even their Big West record at 1-1.
• Both the Point Loma Nazarene men’s and women’s basketball teams opened PacWest Conference play with wins on the road. The Sea Lions women (7-3) defeated Dominican 77-64 and Academy of Art 70-59. Kaylee Byon had 36 points in the two games. Tavia Rowell added 29 total points, and Alli McDonald had 26 points and 17 rebounds.
• The 9-2 PLNU men won 69-56 at Dominican and 58-53 at Academy of Art behind 24 total points from Luke Haupt and Tyce Paulsen and 21 from Zackry Paulsen.
• San Diego City College’s men’s basketball team (7-3) lost to Moorpark 93-82 in the finals of the Grossmont Invitational after defeating Los Angeles Trade Tech 80-78 and Palomar 77-69 in the first two games. Kenny Gonzalez had 51 points in the three games while Logan Huston had 49.
• MiraCosta College men’s basketball team is 6-3 after six straight wins. Freshman forward-center Ramel Bethea leads the Spartans with an average of 13 points and 10 rebounds per game.
• Grossmont College’s women’s basketball team is 8-2 after losing 60-52 to host Cypress in the championship game of the Charger Classic Tournament. The Griffins beat Reedley 105-55 and Merced 74-60. Kyla Palpallatoc (Morse High School) led the Griffins with 60 points over the three games. Janea Wilson (Steele Canyon High School) had 50 total points in the three games and Anayla Anderson had 44.
• Palomar College’s women’s basketball team is 6-3 after going 1-2 in the Charger Classic.
