Preview: The San Diego roster is loaded, boasting All-CIF players Alexander Villanueva, Isaiah Cook, Ty Olsen, Journey Tala, Liam Kline, Michael Field, Braylon Cardwell, Caleb Reese, Luke Westfall, Brody Hariff and Eugene Rice. Rice helped Lincoln to the San Diego Section Open Division title. The Hornets went on to win the Division 1-AA state title. Villanueva ran for more than 3,200 yards this season, setting a CIF San Diego Section single-season record. He had 297 yards in the San Diego Section championship game. The quarterbacks are Kartell Purvis and Elijah Ruiz. Purvis passed for more than 2,800 yards this season at Mater Dei Catholic. Ruiz, who threw for 2,700 yards at Patrick Henry, is San Diego’s other quarterback.
History: Los Angeles won last year’s game 31-26 in a series that has also featured games against the best from the Inland Empire. Makasi prides itself on identifying college-level and pro-level players.
