SDSU vs. Air Force

When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Viejas Arena

On the air: Fox Sports 1; 760-AM

Records: SDSU is 9-3 (2-1); Air Force is 3-11 (0-3)

Series history: SDSU leads 64-24 and has won nine straight, including last year’s only meeting, a 77-64 Aztecs road win. At Viejas Arena, SDSU has won 16 straight, the last loss coming in 2005.

Aztecs update: The 76-68 win at Boise State on Saturday came with a healthy metrics bump, from 42 to 34 in Kenpom and 48 to 35 in NET. Associated Press poll voters weren’t as impressed, moving them up three spots to 32nd overall after dropping them 15 (from No. 20) following the 67-66 home loss against Utah State the previous Saturday. Taj DeGourville was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week after his 13-point, six-rebound performance at Boise State, most of it coming in the closing minutes. Pharaoh Compton, who ranks third among Mountain West freshmen in scoring (7.1 ppg), sat out Saturday with a sprained ankle. He returned to practice Tuesday, a good sign in terms of playing against Air Force. Miles Heide, who gave the Aztecs strong minutes Saturday and was on the floor in crunch time, was ill and missed practice Thursday. Reese Waters is out of his protective boot and wearing a sneaker but still awaiting another bone scan later this month on the stress fracture in his right foot. Coach Brian Dutcher has said they’re waiting until doctors give him clearance to start rehabbing before discussing whether to return this season or shut it down and take a medical redshirt.

Falcons update: It’s been a rough go, with the only wins coming against Jacksonville State, Mercyhurst and Stony Brook. The three Mountain West losses are by 18, 19 and 15 points. There are a lot of reasons for that — talent, size, admissions restrictions, history — but perhaps the most curious one is free throw shooting. The Falcons are making just 60.5% of them, which ranks 362nd out of 364 Division I programs. The national average is 71.6%. Senior guard Ethan Taylor (14.4) leads them in scoring and ranks fifth nationally in minutes per game at nearly 36.7. The only other player averaging double figures is sophomore 7-footer Wesley Celichowski (10.6). Last season’s leading scorer, Rytis Petraitis (15.7), transferred to Cal, where he averages half that. Freshman guard Kyle Marshall, who has started the past five games, is second in the Mountain West in scoring (7.2) behind Fresno State’s Elijah Price (9.4). The Falcons have shot over 50% in three of the last four games and rank fourth in the Mountain West over the season at 46.9%. They’re also fourth in 3-pointers per game at 7.9. In most other statistical categories, they are at or near the bottom of the conference.

Next up: at New Mexico on Saturday (10 a.m. PST, CBS)
