The San Diego Wave have re-signed backup goalie Hillary Beall to a one-year contract, giving them depth at one of soccer’s most important positions.

Acquired from Racing Louisville in January, Beall appeared in five matches and started two of them during the 2024 season. She logged a shutout in the Wave’s Concacaf W Champions Cup win over Vancouver in October.

Wave Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton called Beall “a reliable and hard-working professional who brings valuable depth and stability to our goalkeeper position.”

Beall is again expected to back up Kailen Sheridan, one of the National Women’s Soccer League’s best goalkeepers and a member of Canada’s Olympic and World Cup teams. Sheridan is under contract through 2026.

The 25-year-old Beal is a Long Beach native who played at Irvine’s Crean Lutheran High School and the University of Michigan. She spent the 2023 season on loan to Western United of Australia’s A-League; while there, she helped her team reach the grand final.

Beal’s re-signing provides a smidge of stability for a club that’s still searching for a new coach after going through three of them — Casey Stoney, Paul Buckle and Landon Donovan — during a 6-13-7, playoff-less 2024 season. Star Alex Morgan retired, and the Wave traded Abby Dahlkemper and agreed to release Sofia Jakobsson.

Ashton is entering her first full season as general manager. The club was sold to the Levine Leichtman family in October.
