The San Diego Wave continue rebuilding their roster for the 2025 season, even as they search for a club president and coach.

The Wave announced Friday that they have signed UCLA defender Quincy McMahon to a three-year deal.

McMahon was a four-year starter for the Bruins, scoring eight goals in 86 matches and contributing to their 2022 national championship club. She was named MVP of the Big Ten Tournament this fall.McMahon has played for the United States at the U-18, U-19, U-20 and U-23 levels.

The Wave’s signing of McMahon is part of a new way of doing business in the National Women’s Soccer League. The NWSL has done away with the annual draft, opting instead to allow clubs to sign eligible players as free agents. The Wave last month inked University of Texas star forward Trinity Byars to a two-year contract through the 2026 season, with a mutual option for 2027.

“We’re very happy that Quincy has decided to come to San Diego to begin her professional career with Wave FC,” said Wave Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “Quincy has not only proven herself as a standout defender at every level in which she has played, but she has also been disciplined in her pursuit of becoming a professional player. She has shown great development at UCLA and U.S. Youth National Teams, and we are excited to see her progression at the NWSL level.”

The 21-year-old McMahon joins a Wave club that includes Naomi Girma, the United States’ most accomplished defender, in addition to fellow United States Women’s National Team and Olympic standout Jaedyn Shaw.

The three-year old Wave are in the middle of an organizational reboot.

Star Alex Morgan retired and Abby Dahlkemper was traded during the 2024 season, and the club missed the eight-team NWSL playoffs. San Diego hired Ashton to replace GM Molly Downtain and is in the process of hiring both a new coach to replace Landon Donovan, the last of three people to run the club in 2024, and a new club president to replace Jill Ellis. Ellis, a longtime USWNT coach, left the club earlier this month for a job with FIFA.

In October, the club announced the sale to the Levine-Leichtman family from Ron Burkle had been finalized.
