Foot Locker West Qualifying Meet
When: Saturday. Girls start at 10:20 a.m., with the boys starting at 10:50 a.m.
Where: Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut
How: The top 10 finishers, boys and girls, advance to the Dec. 14 Foot Locker National Championships at Balboa Park.
Who: Runners from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming and overseas citizens.
Girls to watch: Defending West Regional champion Chiara Dailey of La Jolla is coming off capturing the state Division 4 title with the fastest time of the day over the relatively flat 3-mile Woodward Park course in Fresno. The Mt. SAC course is more challenging with numerous large hills. Dailey won last year’s race by 16 seconds with a time of 17:42.0. then finished 11th in the nationals. Don’t be surprised if Canyon Crest Academy’s Katja Dunayevich and Eastlake’s Jaelyn Williams make some noise.
Boys to watch: The highest returning West Regional placer is Concord De La Salle’s Trey Caldwell, who finished fifth a year ago, one spot ahead of Boise’s Jack Sheesley, another returnee. Poway’s Cooper Castleberry and Rancho Bernardo’s Camden Luecht have had a terrific competition this season and both are considered outside possibilities to finish in the Top 10.
