Both Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are atop the PacWest Conference standings after a pair of doubleheader sweeps at Golden Gym last week.

The men defeated Fresno Pacific 71-60 Thursday and Academy of Art 74-64 Saturday to move into sole possession of first in the PacWest with a 5-1 record. The Sea Lions men, who were ranked 22nd in the national NCAA Division II poll last week, are 12-4 overall.

The women moved to 6-0 and 11-3 by defeating Fresno Pacific 56-44 and Academy of Art 62-50. The Sea Lions women are tied for first in the PacWest with perennial power Azusa-Pacific.

The PLNU men were led by brothers Zackry and Tyce Paulson. Zackry, a senior guard, had 31 points and 13 rebounds in the two games. Tyce, a sophomore guards, had 26 points and nine rebounds.

Senior guard Coby Barnes had 30 points and 11 rebounds in the two wins while Luke Haupt, a 6-foot-7 senior guard out of St. Augustine High School, added 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The PLNU women extended their winning streak to nine straight games behind senior forward Alli McDonald, who totaled 24 points and 24 rebounds in the two games. Senior guard Tavia Rowell totalled 26 points in the two games, while guard Kaylee Byon had 22 points and 11 assists.

The PLNU men and women will play at Hawaii-Hilo on Thursday and Hawaii Pacific Saturday in a pair of PacWest doubleheaders. The Hawaii Pacific men are 3-1 and currently second to PLNU in the PacWest. The Hawaii Pacific women are also 3-1 in conference play.

Elsewhere:

The UC San Diego women’s basketball team defeated Cal State Fullerton 57-45 at home to improve to 2-1 in Big West Conference play and 6-9 overall. Sophomore guard Sumayah Sugapong (La Jolla Country Day) led the Tritons with 15 points. Sophomores Gracie Gallegos and Eric Condron each scored 12 points.

• Junior guard Micah Boone scored 21 points and junior forward Dexter Stratton (San Diego City College) added 17 points and eight rebounds as Cal State San Marcos’ men scored their first win of the season, defeating Cal State East Bay.

• MiraCosta and San Diego City colleges remain undefeated in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference men’s basketball. MiraCosta (11-5, 4-0) scored a 64-59 win at Imperial Valley College last Wednesday and defeated Grossmont College 84-48 at home Saturday. Sophomore forward Pearse Long led MiraCosta with 42 points and 20 rebounds in the two games, going 14-for-23 from the floor.

• San Diego City (11-4, 3-0) routed IVC 119-29 at home. Sophomore guard Cameron Marshall (Patrick Henry High School) scored 27 points and sophomore forward Marley Gonzalez (Escondido Charter) added 22.

•  Palomar College extended its winning streak to six straight games with wins at Mesa College (67-62) and against Cuyamaca (72-68) at home.

• San Diego’s women’s community college basketball teams open PCAC conference play this week. Grossmont College (11-2) plays at Cuyamaca Wednesday in the Griffins’ first game in 18 days. Mesa (10-4) is at Palomar (8-6) the same day.

• San Diego State’s women’s swimming and diving team extended its dual-meet winning streak to 72 straight meets by defeating Pepperdine (165-129) and New Mexico (165-126) last Thursday at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Aztecs host Colorado College and Cal State East Bay Tuesday and USD and Colorado State Saturday in addition to competing in the Lancer Diving Invitational Thursday-Saturday in Riverside.

• UC San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are in the middle of the toughest part of their schedule. The Triton men lost to 18th-ranked Wisconsin 232-49 at the Tritons’ Canyonview Aquatic Center last Saturday. The Triton women lost 221-60 to the 12th-ranked Wisconsin women and 177-103 to 24th-ranked UCLA in a double dual meet. UCSD will face the 16th-ranked USC men and 18th-ranked Trojans women in Los Angeles this week.
