STAT TO NOTE

  • .150 — The opponent average against Reynolds’ high-80s slider, his primary secondary pitch while in the majors. Reynolds threw his slider 43.6 percent of the time, or nearly as often as he threw his upper-90s four-seamer (48.9). The expected batting average against the slider (.091) was even better as it showed to be a true out pitch (45.2 percent whiff rate). Reynolds’ four seamer was also quite effective, yielding a .211 opponent average and a .139 expected batting average.

TRENDING

  • Up — Acquired from the Marlins with Garrett Cooper when the Padres sent Ryan Weathers to Miami, Reynolds had developed into a top-30 prospect since giving up the bat to pitch full time. The former fourth-rounder (2016) had progressed to Triple-A with the Marlins, but his initial move to the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League looked to be a shock to his system as he had a 13.50 ERA, a .356 opponent average and a 3.31 WHIP in 16 innings at Triple-A El Paso after the trade. The ensuing season with El Paso (6.17 ERA, .276 opponent average, 1.69 WHIP, 54 innings) was also rather rough, although the Padres are accustomed to crooked numbers attached to their pitching prospects at that locale. So Reynolds was recalled in July anyway and flashed his potential across two stints in the majors. A tweaked knee the last month of the season, however, robbed Reynolds of momentum heading into the postseason. He got back to pitching the last day of the regular season in the minors, continued to throw at the Padres’ spring training complex and even threw at Petco Park during the NLDS as the team considered its path forward after Joe Musgrove’s injury, but Reynolds was not added to the postseason roster.

2025 OUTLOOK

  • After getting his feet wet in 2024, Reynolds should compete this spring for an opening day bullpen job. He threw as many 2⅔ innings during his nine appearances in the majors, so he’s an option who could provide length in a pinch.
