The Border 2 Fire, which is burning in San Diego’s South Bay, has forced the postponement of all Sweetwater Union High School District sporting events through the weekend.

“We don’t know where this is headed, and we don’t want any of our administrators, coaches, athletes or parents to worry about their child getting to an athletic event this weekend,” said Alex Estrada, athletic director for the Sweetwater Union High School District.

Estrada said that, in addition to safety concerns, the district is worried about with air quality and the health of the athletes. The Sweetwater Union High School District includes 12 schools: Bonita Vista, Castle Park, Chula Vista, Eastlake, Hilltop, Mar Vista, Montgomery, Olympian, Otay Ranch, San Ysidro, Southwest-San Diego and Sweetwater.

“This all may blow over, the winds may shift, and we may all be OK,” Estrada said. “But we’re concerned.”

Estrada stressed that all events will be rescheduled.

“They are not canceled,” Estrada said. “We’ll get everything in.”
