The CIF Football Advisory Committee met recently and made several recommendations for how to choose teams and divisions for postseason play.

The meeting, which usually takes 30-45 minutes, went for more than 90 minutes before San Diego Section Commissioner Joe Heinz decided to convene the group at a later date.

“The committee members were very prepared,” Heinz said. “They brought up some very good points, but we were getting into our time to choose our All-CIF teams.

“So we’ll meet again soon when we have more time to discuss and digest recommendations and suggestions.

“Nothing was decided, but there was a lot of food for thought.”

Winter playoffs

In the fall, the football playoffs were seeded by CalPreps. San Diego’s flag football, girls volleyball, boys water polo and field hockey team used the CIF Power Rankings for playoff seeding. Girls golf used the USGA, cross country used athletic.net and tennis used Universal Tennis.

The winter will be slightly different. MaxPreps will be used to seed boys and girls basketball playoffs. Boys and girls soccer and girls water polo will use the CIF Power Rankings, while Track Wrestling will be used to seed boys and girls wrestling brackets.

More winter playoffs

There are 24 schools in Division 1 for both boys and girls basketball playoffs.

Eight will break out to form the Open Division, leaving a 16-team bracket for Division 1. Divisions No. 2, 3 and 4 will take 16 of 21 available teams. Divisions 5 and 5-AA will take 12 of 19.

Boys and girls soccer will use much the same format as basketball. But since there are fewer girls teams in Divisions 5 and 5-AA, those brackets will be eight teams apiece.

Boys and girls wrestling divisions will be based on school enrollment, with four divisions in the boys and two girls.

There will be four divisions for girls water polo — eight in the Open Division and 12 each in Divisions 1, 2 and 3.
