The Padres, according to Baseball America, have a new top prospect: Leodalis De Vries.
The 18-year-old shortstop is ahead of catcher Ethan Salas in Baseball America’s first top-100 prospect update for the 2025 season.
De Vries is ranked No. 18, ahead of Salas as No. 31.
The two are the only Padres who cracked Baseball America’s top-100, though former Padres on the list who were traded for big-league help include outfielder Owen Caissie (Yu Darvish) and pitcher Jarlin Susana (Juan Soto).
General Manager A.J. Preller’s trades to fortify playoff pushes in 2020, 2022 and last year have sapped the system of much of its depth, but De Vries and Salas still give the Padres plenty to dream on.
Both signed to headline the 2023 (Salas) and 2024 (De Vries) international classes.
The switch-hitting De Vries hit .238/.361/.442 with 11 homers in 75 games to start his career at low Single-A Lake Elsinore, a debut halted by a shoulder injury. He did, however, return to action in time to become the youngest player to homer in the Arizona Fall League since Bryce Harper.
The 19-year-old Salas hit four home runs as an All-Star in the Arizona Fall League after struggling at the plate as essentially a high-school senior at high Single-A Fort Wayne, where he paired four homers with a .599 OPS over 111 games.
Expect both De Vries and Salas receive invitations to big-league camp next month.
