UCSD’s men, women keep winning in basketball; SDSU senior named MW Player of the Week – elcajon newson Elcajon News only

Most college basketball teams across San Diego County head into conference action this week after light schedules around Christmas.

Both UC San Diego men’s and women’s basketball teams scored lopsided wins at home last weekend in their final non-conference games.

The Tritons men (12-2, 2-0 in Big West Conference play) defeated Occidental 109-51 on Saturday. The next day, UCSD’s women (5-9, 1-1) defeated Life Pacific 71-30.

Tyler McGhie led the UCSD men with 24 points in 20 minutes against Occidental. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones scored 16 points and Nordin Kapic had 15 as seven Tritons finished in double figures. McGhie, a senior guard-forward, leads the Tritons with 18.4 points a game. Senior swingman Tait-Jones is averaging 17.1 points and a team-leading 5.3 rebounds per game game. Junior forward Kapic is averaging 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds a game.

Senior forward Kayanna Spriggs led the Tritons’ women with 17 points against Life Pacific. Sophomore guard Sumayah Sugapong (La Jolla Country Day) leads UCSD in scoring with an average of 12.6 points a game. Spriggs is second at 11.2 points a game and leads in rebounding with a 7.4 average.

Both UCSD teams face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

Elsewhere:

• San Diego State’s Adryana Quezada was named the Mountain West Player of the Week after scoring 19 points in a 74-59 Mountain West-opening win over Boise State at Viejas Arena. A senior forward, Quezada hit 9 of 12 shots in just 22 minutes off the bench. The Aztecs are now ranked 82nd in the NET ratings and are projected as a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN.

• Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s and women’s basketball teams share the lead in the PacWest Conference as they resume conference action in a pair of home doubleheaders this week. The Sea Lions men (10-4, 3-1) and women (9-3, 4-0) will host Fresno Pacific on Thursday and Academy of Art on Saturday,

• The Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s basketball teams will be seeking their first wins of the 2024-2025 season when they open California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Cal State East Bay on Thursday and San Francisco State on Saturday. Both CSSM teams are 0-9.

• Most of the area’s community college teams were off last week. The men’s teams resume Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play this week while the women’s teams open PCAC action on Jan. 8.

•  San Diego City College (10-4, 2-0) hosts Imperial Valley College Saturday. MiraCosta College (9-5, 2-0) seeks to snap a three-game losing streak with a game at IVC on Thursday before hosting winless Grossmont College on Saturday. Palomar College (8-5, 1-0) plays at Mesa on Thursday before hosting Cuyamaca on Saturday.

• Palomar College’s women’s basketball team defeated College of the Canyons 86-36 on Saturday. Sophomore guard Nevaeh Mageo (Oceanside High School) led the Comets with 22 points in 19 minutes.
