  • 2025 opening day age: 32
  • Height / Weight: 6-foot-2 / 218 pounds
  • How acquired: Signed as a free agent in December 2022
  • Contract status: Will make $25 million in the third year of his 11-year, $280 million deal; Bogaerts will make $25 million annually through 2033.
  • fWAR in 2024: 2.0
  • Key 2024 stats: .264 avg., .307 OBP, .381 SLG, 11 HRs, 44 RBIs, 50 runs, 28 walks, 79 strikeouts, 13 steals (111 games, 463 plate appearances)

STAT TO NOTE

  • .300 — Bogaerts’ weighted on-base average (wOBA) in 2024, the lowest of his 12-year career. wOBA accounts for how a player reached base, assigning value for events in relation to projected runs scored (a double, for instance, is worth more than a single). Bogaerts’ career wOBA (.351) is better than the average MLB player (.316), but that number is buoyed his days in Boston, where he was a four-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger. Three times, Bogaerts ranked in the top-10% in the majors in wOBA, but he slid to .343 in his first year in San Diego in 2023 and down to .300 last year.

TRENDING

  • Down — Bogaerts’ sore wrist defined his first season with the Padres, as a .664 OPS in his middle 108 games took away from a strong start (.993 OPS through first 22 games) and finish (1.146 OPS over final 25 games). In 2024, it was a fracture in his left shoulder that defined Year 2 as he missed some seven weeks after sustaining the injury on a diving play in Atlanta on May 20. Of course, Bogaerts was off to a slow start to the season (.581 OPS through 47 games). He was a solid producer over 64 games after coming off the injured list (.770 OPS), but even that stretch saw his production seesaw from July (1.087 OPS) to August (.637 OPS) to September (.736 OPS) to the postseason (.564 OPS). Maybe the uncertainty on defense played a role. Bogaerts was asked to move from shortstop to second base upon arriving for spring training to accommodate Ha-Seong Kim’s plus ability at the position. The transition to a new position took some time to feel natural, so much so that Bogaerts was at first hesitant to move back to shortstop when Kim first sustained his shoulder injury in August. Bogaerts changed his tune after it became clear that Kim would not make a quick recovery, finishing the season back at shortstop.

2025 OUTLOOK

  • The only questions are whether Bogaerts plays shortstop or second base — as the team has yet to address Kim’s departure as a free agent — and whether he hits enough to justify spot in the upper half of the Padres lineup, where he’s been largely entrenched despite falling far below expectations assigned to players with nine-figure contracts. Because Bogaerts is entering his Age 32 season, it’s difficult to project a major leap toward previous standards, but that’s what the Padres need if they aren’t going to add significant pieces to the core this season.
